16 March 2011 Prayer

Just back in from walking the dog on a foggy morning, it was hard to see the other edge of the field and I think that reflects one or two things in my week so far. On Saturday we visited Bletchley Park which was the code breaking centre during the second world war.It was a interesting visit made more so by the passion of those volunteers still involved and the realisation of what was achieved by the people who worked there. I won't pretend I understood all the information on Enigma or how the codes were broken, but I was moved by the way great minds came together to find answers and by their  devotion to what they were trying to do.

Later this week I was reading something about prayer, another mystery to me.  Tom Wright puts it this way,  "prayer is about heaven and earth overlapping in time and space" now I do not understand how this can happen but I know that in these few moments I am able to speak to God , that the one who created heaven and earth listens comes into my little world.

It was a privilege to see the work done by many at Bletchley  Park  a privilege to recognise that when we pray we stop heaven in its tracks and have it listen to our small scared voices.

"This, then, is how you should pray:

   “‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,

 your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,

as we also have forgiven our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.’

Matthew 6 9-13
