22 June 2010 writing on the wall

As a Scot , I am very careful what I say about the English team and don't feel it is my place to comment. However I did hear twice this week the question asked "Is the writing on the wall?" one in connection to our future in this world cup and one in connection with the future of Tony Hayward of BP. It is a very well known phrase used to predict impending downfall.

It is of course from the book of Daniel, and describes a very spooky scene when Belshazzar is in the middle of  a seriously decadent party and a mysterious hand writes on the wall behind him. No-one at the party can read the writing until Daniel is brought to translate and makes it clear it is the hand of God and it is not good news for Belshazzar.

This may all seem a little far fetched for those who like an explanation, but the words of Daniel are chillingly relvant today.

"You praised the Gods of silver and gold,of bronze, iron, wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or understand. But you did not honour the God who holds in his hand your life and all your ways." Daniel 5 vs 22-24

What are the Gods that we praise? and how much do we honour the God who created us?
