15 June 2010 Harvest

I was interested to read this week about the new development by a minister in Scotland to stream services live onto phones so that those who did not choose to or could not get to church would be able to hear the service wherever they were.

I can see that some people will object to this, not for the housebound but for those to whom this provides an alternative to church. I too can see some downsides but I also think technology has lots to offer us here. There are many people who would never go to church anyway but who may well be interested in hearing preaching without having to go to church. I still listen to preaching from my church in the US over my laptop when I am doing the ironing during the week , and if I am on public transport I happily plug into my online bible for a daily study.

Jesus walked through villages and went to where people were, he did not ask them to come to him and while I would be delighted to see people flock to church on Sunday I don't think it is going to happen, so maybe we too need to go where people are,and whether we like it or not technology is where we are likely to find people.

Jesus said "The harvest is large, but there are few workers to gather it in.Pray to the owner of the harvest that he will send out workers to gather in his harvest." Matthew 9 vs 37

Might this be another way to gather the harvest?
