14 June 2010 OK
I heard a lovely story last week about communication. My friend told me
of a couple she knew who for years had the same routine as they both set
off for work. They drove to work together and as they left the driveway
her husband always turned to her and asked "OK?" and she replied OK.
Until one morning he backed out and hit another car.
As he ranted the realization began to dawn that his OK? really meant "is there anything coming ?" and her OK really meant "Thanks for asking dear I am fine today."
It is a great story , but isn't it so easy to stop communicating what we really mean, whether through lack of time or effort it becomes easier to stop trying. I don't think it is any different in our communication with God, how easy it is to say our prayers by rote, to rhyme off a list of people and things which need praying for rather than to turn to God with all our passion, lay bare the things which really worry us , and tell him how we really feel. Sometimes OK is just not enough.
