25 May 2010 Roots

This weekend I attempted to dig out a flower bed in my garden and was amazed at how dry the earth is, coming from a rather wet area of Scotland, it is new to me to be digging in what appears to be dust, yet for all that the trees in my garden appear to be thriving and the crops in the field at the bottom of the garden are steadily growing. The only explanation I can think of is that their roots are bedded in enough moisture and nutrients that even when we hit a dry spell they continue to grow.

It made me question where my roots are bedded, I know if I take the time with God, if I read my bible and pray

and take time to listen for God and think about my faith  then I can feel my roots safe and secure whatever is going on on the surface, but the times when I have neglected that relationship are the times when I do dry up and become beset with worries and fears.

The weather on the surface will always be a challenge, but if I look to root myself in Christ and hear his words then I too can continue to grow.

"If you work the words into your life, you are like a smart carpenter who dug deep and laid the foundation of his house on bedrock. When the river burst its banks and crashed against the house, nothing could shake it; it was built to last." Luke 6 vs 48
