24 May 2010 Bar b que

Like millions of others this weekend we got out the bar-b-que to enjoy the lovely weather, and in the vague hope that our girls might one day cook for us, we were showing them how to work it. As we explained that the flames had to die down completely before we started, if we wanted anything worth eating, it made me think that its not so different in other aspects of life.

Isn't it always better to take a little time, let things settle down before we speak rashly, or act on impulse. I was also reminded of Elijah meeting God on the top of the mountain, where God was not to be heard in the fire or the wind, but in the still small voice of calm. In the midst of all the noise this week I hope I will give time for the flames to die down and will listen out for the small voice of calm.

And, behold, the Lord passed by,
and a great and strong wind
rent the mountains,
and brake in pieces the rocks
before the Lord;
but the Lord was not in the wind:
and after the wind an earthquake;
but the Lord was not in the earthquake:
and after the earthquake a fire;
but the Lord was not in the fire:
and after the fire a still small voice.
I Kings 19:11,12
