10 May 2010 Gifts

During the election campaign I became aware of how many promises were being made, If you vote for our party we promise to do......, sometimes rather than specifics they were simply promises the candidates made to work their hardest on our behalf. Whether these promises are deliverable or not time will tell although I am sure they are made with the best of intentions.

It has taken me a long time and in fact is still part of the journey to really accept that the things God promises do not depend on me doing anything, and that he will always deliver. I wonder if you are like me and although you read and are amazed at this unconditional love something within you still puts conditions on it, e.g. maybe you become involved in all sorts of church work to please God, maybe you feel that you have to be on too many committees in order to win his approval. Slowly I am coming to realise the truth of the idea that there is nothing we can do to make God love us more, and nothing we can do to make God love us less.

His love comes with no strings attached and unlike our those who have taken on the mantle of government, we are not asked to prove ourself. It is indeed a gift.

I have used this verse so many times but I still feel it is the most moving image I can see of the father's unconditional love for us.

" "But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him." Luke 15 vs 20
