3 May 2010 A Job Well Done

On Friday I took delivery of two new attachments to my vacuum cleaner and found myself very keen to see how well they worked. As I tried them out I caught my 47 year old self thinking how sad my 27 year old self would have found it that I was getting excited about cleaning my house (actually even my 47 year old self thought it was pretty sad).

However life is not always glamorous , it consists of a mixture for most of us of the very ordinary and the more exciting things and I think it is good to take pride in all of it. There is a satisfaction in a job well done whatever that job is and who is to say what is more important. Brother Lawrence was a monk who aspired to great things yet eventually found deep contentment in the pots and pans of the kitchen.

Whatever is our purpose or the task we are engaged in,  if we  give it our best  it becomes meaningful in God's eyes, and satisfying to our hearts.

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as though you were working for the Lord and not for human beings." Colossians 3 vs 23
