In a book I have been reading lately a phrase has been used which stuck in my mind, the author speaks of one of our modern day Gods being the "God of Self Reliance" in other words we put trust in our ability to solve our problems, that we rely only on ourselves to control our lives.

 

It seemed a good phrase to describe the religion of many at present, yet there are so many things we cannot control, things which are out of our hands. Can we simply rely on ourselves to see us through illness, bereavement, depression, disaster, and the times when we hit the wall?

I think humans are amazing and capable of great things but I believe we were created by one who was greater and who stretches out his hand to us ready to help, if we will only accept it.

"Jerusalem Jerusalem....How many times have I wanted to put my arms round all your people, just a a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you would not let me!" Matthew 23 vs37-38
