22 January 2010 Riches

In advance preparation for moving house we are beginning to go through cupboards and throw away some things we do not need. Given that we have only lived here for a year I am astounded how much we have gathered and the absolute horror came when my husband discovered a book he had bought twice because he forgot he already had it.

I know we are not alone in this, consumerism is a way of life in the Western world we have so much yet do not seem any more contented or joyful for it. I am reminded again of Jesus' teaching so clear and simple and so relevant;

"Do not store up riches for yourselves here on earth,where moths and rust destroy, and robbers break in and steal. Instead, store up riches for yourselves in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and robbers cannot break in and steal. For your heart will always be where your riches are." Matthew 6 vs 19-21
