19 January 2010 Commands

At a service I attended on Sunday we sang the song "Be Still and know that I am Lord" and I was struck anew by a couple of things from it.

Firstly it is a command, not a suggestion or a option but a firm and loving command, and it firstly asks us to be still. This has to be the starting point doesn't it, because we are all so busy and our minds so full and at times so guilty if we are not busy, that we need permission to stop. Only a command from God can do it "you need to stop, you need to be still"

Secondly again in the same authoritative way another command "know that I am God, " note for all we who worry and doubt and vacillate between trusting and not trusting, this is a straightforward telling it like it is "know that I am God" don't doubt it, don't wonder if it might be true, don't hesitate just know.

Suddenly my breathing slows, I find myself letting out a sigh, the tension and the little things which nag at me diminish and I hear from his own words God speaking directly to me - with this proclamation, what can possibly break my peace.
