11 January 2010 Reminders

Several months ago a thoughtful friend of mine gave me a small embroidered cross with a poem entitled "The cross in my pocket", which I have kept in my purse and found a great help in reminding me what is really important, as I go about my everyday business.

Unfortunately in an unguarded moment in the chaos of my weekend , the dog got into my bag and made short work of it, which I was a bit fed up about, because although we have reminders of God and his work and creation all around us, how often do we really see it?

I confess ,like many others I think that as I plough through the week with all my "things to do" it is easy to let an awareness of God slip to the back of my  mind. The closeness I felt on a Sunday in church drifts to be replaced by shopping lists, work issues and family timetables unless I take the time to remind myself of God's presence in my life.

It takes a daily time of reading , reflection and prayer and ,yes ,sometimes a small reminder in my pocket  to put God where he belongs, for he should not just be an accessory in my life, but the central point which directs my thoughts, words and actions.

"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." Matthew vs 33
