6 December 2010 Stocking Up

I am beginning to wonder whether the supermarkets sponsor the weather forecast.

I say this because yesterday the magic word snow was mentioned and that was all it took to send people in droves to stock up on everything in case they cannot leave the house this side of March.

At this point I confess to being part of that as I have no wish to drive out in snowy conditions and want to feel the security of a well stocked fridge and freezer. However it did make me wonder whether it really would kill us to make do with what we have.

The election campaign this week seems to hint at future food shortages and a need to waste less and make do a little more, so perhaps the economy will begin to shift our cultural pattern of overconsumption. The bible of course has been telling us for centuries, warning us that security and peace of mind is not to be found in amassing material goods, but in building a relationship with God and putting our trust in him.

I know that however much I stock the cupboards they will be empty again, but Jesus reminds us that he is the bread of life.

"I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never grow hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty." John 6 vs 35
