15 December 2009 Pride

On Sunday night I had the house to myself and so I enjoyed watching for the umpteenth time Pride and Prejudice and yes it was the one with Mr Darcy coming out of the lake. I love the book also and am reminded again how much pride can stand in our way.

Weare encouraged to take pride in certain things, our work ourselves, ourchildren even our country but the problem starts when we become soproud of ourselves that we see ourselves above others and it can creepup on us so easily. When I lived in the USA I volunteered to work inthe school library stacking shelves, in the past I had at one time beenHead of Department in High School and I will not forget how much mypride hurt when teachers passed me by stacking the shelves without evennoticing me. Pride can creep up on us.

At the moment Ienjoy art classes with a group of lovely people and I am dying to knowwhat some of them did before they retired, yet I am aware that whateverlofty positions they may have held, we are all beginners in this classand nothing else matters.

I think this is how it will bewhen we reach heaven, it will not matter what we were or how how muchwe had, what will matter is what we did with our lives to follow Jesus, to show our love for God and to make things better for our neighbour.Pride will have no place.

"The trophy that matters is noton our shelves or resumes. It is the sopul that we become. That is thecrown that we will one day cast before God."

Jon Ortberg When the game is over it all goes back in the box
