7 December 2009 Blind

There is a silly story which appeared in the papers over the weekend about parents spending vast amounts of money on children's nativity costumes in order to impress. I am not sure how much truth their is in it, but it seemed just another example of the many ways in which we can miss the point of Christmas. It was written "There are none so blind as those who cannot see" and it seems to me we are all capable of this at Christmas.

In the gospel Jesus gives sight to the blind and the bible uses blindness on two levels, not just the physical but for those who do not believe, that he opens their eyes that they might see and understand. It is easy to be  blinded by the tinsel and glitter of Christmas I know how easily, and so I have to make sure I take the time to read God's word and let him open my eyes that I might once again see the child in the manger, God's own son come to live among us and dwell with us.

"Jesus then said,"I came into this world to bring everything into the clear light of day, making all distinctions clear so that those who have never seen will see, and those who have made a great pretense of seeing will be exposed

as blind" John 9 vs 40 The Message
