30 November 2009 St Andrew

Today is St Andrew's day, the patron Saint of Scotland, and not much it seems is known of St Andrew, except that he was a disciple.

The one thing I always associate Andrew with is the short passage of how he came to follow Jesus. Jesus is walking  on the shore of Lake Galilee and sees the two fishermen Simon and Andrew, and speaks to them saying

""Come with me , and I will make you fishers of men."At once they left their nets and went with him."

It is hard to fully imagine that scene, but something in the way Jesus spoke touched them enough to leave  their trade, their life's work and "at once " follow him.

At times I have felt God ask something of me, it may have seemed as odd to me as catching people seemed to Andrew, but for me I would have taken days and weeks to think it over, speak to someone and decide whether this was the right thing to do. I admire the disciples for their instant response and pray that I may equally be open to God's call.
