25 November 2009 Floods

As I watched the awful pictures from Cumbria on the news this week, the scale of the damage became apparent. I have much sympathy with anyone who has lost their possessions to flooding as myself and my family experienced the same thing in 1996, when we had to leave our home for five months for the water damage to be repaired. It is  a painful task throwing away belongings and treasures and knowing that even if you are covered by insurance some things can never be replaced.

Such an experience left me with three thoughts, the first was how dependent I was on my possessions and how adrift I felt when I had no home to return to. The second was how amazing people can be in a crisis as we received so much help from not just friends and neighbours but complete strangers who heard about our plight, and thirdly that it does pass and amazingly life does get back to normal.

I learnt that things can change overnight, but that God is unchanging, and I learnt how much can be changed by neighbour helping neighbour.

"I wait eagerly for the Lord's help, and in his word I trust" Psalm130 vs5
