This week I was at a family funeral, and it was a sad occasion for all involved. I was aware that during such times the day to day concerns and trivia disappear and we are left looking at the big questions of life. What do we rely on when we have no control over events, where do we turn for strength? What is really important in our lives?
Jon Ortberg's book has the fabulous title, 'When the game is over it all goes back in the box" discussing just this issue, how do we live our lives and what is truly important?
It is definately a good thing to take time and consider, to look at our priorities and to remember that only God will be there unchanging throughout our lives and putting our trust in the other things we make Gods, of like work or posessions or wealth, will ultimately become meaningless and let us down.
"O Lord my strength and my fortress,
My refuge in times of distress,
to you the nations will come
from the ends of the earth and say,
"Our fathers possessed nothing but false gods,
worthless idols that did them no good.""
Jeremiah 16 vs 19
