29 September 09 Harvest
Sunday in our church was Harvest Thanksgiving, it was a very joyfulservice and as well as some lovely new music we sang at the end themost famous of all harvest hymns
"We plough the fields and scatter"
Old though it may be, I think the words of this hymn are lovely and Iparticularly like the way in which it shows that although we may workat something it is God who really makes it happen.
We may plough fields and scatter seed but it takes the warmth of the sun and the soft refreshing rain in order to make the crop grow. As we get into the week, whatever we are doing, it is good to be reminded that however much work we may put in, it is God that will bring that work to bearf ruit and so we need to ask for his help at each step, do what he asks,and wait for his will to be done.
"We plough the fields and scatter
The good seed on the land,
But it is fed and watered
By God's almighty hand:
He sends the snow in winter,
The warmth to swell the grain,
The breezes and the sunshine,
And soft, refreshing rain.
Refrain:
All good gifts around us
Are sent from heaven above;
Then thank the Lord,
O thank the Lord,
For all his love."
