9 September 09 Selfish

There was a case in the paper this week of a mother who killed hertoddler by giving him anti-depressants,and the judge in his summing up said that she had acted "selfishly." It struck me as an unusual accusation to be made and a frightening one as to where selfishness can, in extreme circumstances, lead.
Because  isn't it tempting for each of us to put self first, indeed are we not almost encouraged to do so in our society.
Self has taken centre stage in so many of our lives, I for one am notguilt free in this, so that decisions in work , relationships, how we spend our  time are taken with a view of what is best for me and notwhat I can do for others. Such a motivation can cause all sorts of problems, not as extreme as this case but damaging nonetheless.

Jesus taught us to put God first, and our neighbour second , to see our actions and our decisions  guided by what he would want for us not what we want for ourselves. The good Samaritan crossed the road and helped the man who had been robbed, the early church shared their possessions and Jesus gave his life for others.

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind."This is the greatest and most important commandment. The second most important commandment is like it:"Love your neighbour as you love yourself."
Matthew 22 vs 37
