4 September 09 Forgive
I always enjoy reading the "Wayside Pulpits" outside churches, some aregenuinely challenging and some just make me smile, but I was reallysurprised to read the following one while on holiday.
"Forgive your enemies- nothing annoys them more" which seemed such amisrepresentation of what Jesus was saying. Forgiving our enemies andeven more importantly, loving them is not some subversive strategy towin the battle, it is an act of pure unselfish giving which takes analmost superhuman ability.
Revenge is so much a part of our human nature but here is Jesusturning that nature upside down and asking us to love even those whodon't love us back, because only then do we move closer to being theperfect images of God that we were created to be, and only then doesthis broken world stand a chance of healing.
"But now I tell you: love your enemies and pray for those who persecuteyou, so that you may become the children of your Father in heaven."
Matthew 5vs44
