3 July 2009 Sentences

There are two prison sentences in the news just now.
Bernie Madoffhas just been sentenced to 150 years for his investment fraud andapparently those who had lost money were cheering at his sentence.
Ronnie Biggs has just been refused parole from his 35 year life sentence and his family are appealing.
Iam very glad that the legal system makes these decisions and I don'thave to. Both have committed crimes which caused untold hurt and painand both are receiving punishment under the law of their countries, which seems right and proper. I was thinking of those who had been hurtby both and then I read

 Matthew 5 vs 44
"But now I tellyou;love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that youmay become the children of your father in heaven." So what do we do?

Thetwo I have mentioned are not enemies to me on a personal level but theyare to some, and I have my own issues so I have to question, whether wecan love our enemies? Is it possible? I can ignore, and forget but canI love?

All I can do is look at the example of others, Jesushimself who continues to love us in spite of  everything, then thereare Ghandi, Martin Luther King and in each case they proved that it isonly by this supreme love the world can change for the better. Can I doit , not by myself , but with the help of him who is love, maybe it ispossible.
