I am a big fan of Jon Ortberg a Christian writer, whose books in my
opinion make some great observations on faith in an accessible way and
whom I was lucky enough to meet once when we he was in Glasgow giving
a series of talks.
I still cannot quite believe the conversation I had with him, definetely one of these moments when I was stuck for something to say and babbled. I told him the true story that I had been reading his book on spiritual disciplines one chapter of which was about slowing down and taking time, unfortunately I was in the bath at the time and I fell fast asleep and so my copy of Spiritual Disciplines is a very warped, water damaged copy. Probably not the most engaging conversation he had that night, but he did say that maybe falling asleep was just what I needed to do at that time.
I was reminded of this because yesterday when I should have been writing my thought for the day I fell asleep on the sofa, apologies for that. But the point is a good one, sometimes we do just need to give in and rest, to leave behind the list of things to do and take time to replenish ourselves. After Elijah's triumph over the prophets of Baal, he became very depressed, ran away, and fell asleep., It is amazing how much better things can look when we take time to refresh our minds and bodies.
"Its too much Lord " he(Elijah prayed) Take away my life I might as well be dead."
He lay down under the tree and fell asleep"
1 Kings 19 vs4-5
