20 May 2009 Carers

Like the "Good Samaritan, " we are called to serve others and sometimes that is wearyingly hard work. I don't know the numbers but there are huge amounts of carers in the UK, adults caring for elderly parents, children caring for parents, partners caring for one another. I heard a small clip today of one woman describing how she looked after her husband who suffered from Parkinson's until she herself collapsed and was then faced with the torturous decision of putting him into care.

When my Dad had his stroke ,Mum overnight became a full time carer and as he could no longer communicate or move around, the day to day became a painful, long and lonely struggle that she willingly undertook out of pure love. And such is God's love for us that he walks right alongside us in these situations, giving us strength and asking us to find rest in him. For anyone who is struggling to look after a loved one, I pray they will feel equally loved and uplifted by the one who cares for all of us.

"Come to me ,all of you who are tired and heavy laden, and I will give you rest.Take my yoke and put it on you, and learn from me for I am gentle and humble of spirit; and you will find rest. For the yoke I will give you is easy, and the load I will put on you is light."
