19 May 2009 Samaritan

The Good Samaritan is a phrase which has passed into secular culture, to describe someone who helps others, and most of us are familiar with the work of the Samaritans. All coming from a story Jesus told to ttry and describe to us what loving our neighbour really means.

How must it have felt to be the traveller lying in the gutter after his attack and see the legs of those who pass by despite his cries. I would like to think that I would not walk past someone in need, but in some wider sense I most certainly do. Christian Aid week has just finished, did I give all I could, or did I walk by?

Terrible things continue to happen in Burma, do I find ways to help or do I walk by? Child poverty in the UK is at its highest level for many years, do I stop or do I walk by?

The Good Samaritan went out of his way to help, it was against his faith, probably against his plans and  his wallet yet that didn't stop him,and that is what Jesus means. We need to go the extra mile to be a good neighbour- it may interfere with our earthly plans but it matters most in Gods eyes.

"Jesus replied,You go then, and do the same."
