1 May 2009 In Touch

The Government has had a tough week this week by any standard, and it has been said by many in relation to the subject of the Gurkhas that they were out of touch with the people's wishes. It is easy to see how it happens ,and we the people who voted in the Government become irrate when it does. How could they not represent our wishes?

It is something that we within the church must guard against.
During the USA elections the candidates  made much use of the phrase "kitchen table issues", in other words the things that families sat around their kitchen table and discussed, the issues that were central to their lives, and the candidates knew they ignored these at their peril.

Jesus never ignored the kitchen table issues. He walked, talked and worked with the people, he knew their problems, burdens and concerns without ever needing to take a poll or a sounding.  There are so many issues at the moment, financial worries, job concerns, unemployment , ill health. Many of us are are frightened, worried and struggling. It may be how you are feeling right now. Now more than ever, we need to feel the  reassurance of  God's unchanging love. By keeping in touch we can see how those around us are feeling , and be ready to lend a quiet listening ear or undertake some small  kind deed.

Governments and politicians may do it to win votes, but for us as for Jesus it is all about loving our neighbour.

"Love your neighbour as yourself"
Mark 12 vs 30-31
