I expect I am a little behind the times, but it was only last night that I discovered the you tube clip of Susan Boyle auditioning for Britain's Got Talent. It really was the most challenging viewing, and raises serious questions about how we as a society judge others.

I was reminded of Samuel in his search for a successor to Saul as he visits the town of Bethlehem to meet with the sons of Jesse.Samuel picks Eliab, tall and handsome no doubt with a kingly demeanour yet God rejests him in favour of a young, inexperienced shepherd boy who becomes King David.

It would seem today as then that appearances play the biggest part in our perceptions of people, and Susan Boyle has taught us all a valuable lesson.

"But the Lord said to him,"Pay no attention to how tall and handsome he is.I have rejected him because I do not judge as people judge. They look at the outward appearance but I look at the heart.
