21 April 2009 Committees

Committees! Does anyone actually enjoy them?

Church committees can be especially tricky and so often become bogged down in irrelevant detail and ritual. Paul wrote to the church in Corinth trying to sort out all kinds of factions and divisions over what we might consider distracting detail.

What to wear, whether the head be covered or not, what was acceptable to eat, the correct procedure for those who became Christians. In some sad way we can be reassured that things were just as difficult then as they seem to be now.

Paul's answer to all of these is also the same we should have now. Whatever choice we make or decision or procedure should be motivated by love  and carried out in order to give God the glory. It seems to me a test that should still be applied to all our committees and their work.

"Well whatever you do, whether you eat or drink, do it all for God's glory.Live in such a way as to cause no trouble either to Jews or Gentiles or to the Church of God."
1Corinthians 10 vs 31
